Foreign students who plan to stay more than one year are required to join this program. By not joining this program, students will have to pay all medical expenses incurred when visiting a doctor or hospital.
Although a fee for entering this program is required, once enrolled members only pay 30% of actual medical costs. In the case of serious illness and hospitalizations, there is a tremendous advantage in joining this program. In particular, students accompanied by family members should join this program. Application needs to be completed at the National Health Insurance Section in the city hall or town hall where the applicants filed for alien registration. (Alien registration must be done prior to applying for health insurance.)
Insurance fees depend on the city, town or village and the individual's income. There are reduction measures (two kinds: 60% off and 40 % off) for low income residents.
If there is something wrong with your health, go see a doctor as soon as possible. Even a minor disorder such as a headache, insomnia, and a decrease in appetite may lead to serious illness if the symptoms continue over a long period of time. There is a Health Administration Center on campus and the doctor and nurse in the center will provide consultation, so please feel free to visit. (Open: Weekdays 9:00~17:00)
All people residing in Japan who are older than 20 years of age must join this program. This includes foreign students as well. The purpose of this pension is to provide security in the case of becoming disabled from accident or sickness after joining the program. If one's annual income is less than 1,430,000 yen, one can apply for the "Special Payment System for Students".
